Times Like These

This post is a bit on the personal side, and speaks to self-discovery.  Nicole and I, I being Marina, met Ned Farr and Dreya Weber last week, and I will admit I was more than a little intimidated at first.  These guys are so good at what they do – all you have to do is watch “A Marine Story” or “The Gymnast“, or one of the brilliant shorts “Dream a Little Dream For Me” or “The Catcher” to find that out.  They’ve been doing this a long time – me, not so much – so I was nervous.  Long story short – they were lovely and I did not sound like an idiot, which made me insanely happy  because I have a deep admiration for both of them.  What I did sound like was an independent filmmaker, and you could have knocked me over with a feather when I came to that realization.  I had stories to tell and I actually understood their stories – I took advice and gave it too – everyone throwing out details of what went right and what went wrong, and we all lamented together about the people who royally screwed us over.  When you come to the truth of what you love and what you were meant to do it’s a very odd moment.  Everyone else in the room is going about business as usual, and on the inside you’re jumping up and down and screaming “Woohoo”.   I’m still surprised they didn’t hear me.  Elena Undone has been many things to many people:   a little glimmer of hope that it’s not too late,  more quality lesbian content for future date nights curled up in bed, a confirmation of soul mates, the return of Nicole Conn, joy for another female driven project in this male dominated business of making movies, or simply the visual feast of Necar and Traci.  For me, it was simply the beginning…

Baby, you are my light and my love… this is such a beautiful post… “Elena Undone” truly was the auspicious beginning for my lovely Marina – and it has been such a joy to see my life partner light up like a blazing meteor whenever she has anything to do with filmmaking. It’s so lovely to see someone blossom into who and what they are…it has given me such joy to watch her from across the set, beaming as she talks to the grip guys, laughing with Traci or Necar, pointing out to the art department that “those drapes would never be in Peyton’s house,” suggesting to wardrobe they change Elena’s wardrobe as she became more unhinged, cooking breakfast burritos for our beleagured production staff at three in the morning. She catered (literally), craft-serviced, location scouted, did-payroll, held my hand while I edited 20 hours a day, took care of our lives and six kids during the process, and gave me great suggestions into the bargain. Marina’s a natural. And it’s in her blood. The other night we were joking about the possibility of winning the lottery and both of us looked deeply and dreamily into one another’s eyes. And it wasn’t about jumping in the sack, either. Like the “jinx twins” our brains both went to the next movie we’d make!! “Elena Undone” may have been Marina’s first lesbian indie feature, but for me it was a love poem to a woman who literally brought me back to life… I love you, sweet, dear, Cuban, gorgeous woman-that-you-are, my mercurial Marina… and here’s to making many more movies with you…

Nicole & Marina, I was 24, divorced, with a 1 month old baby when I met a beautiful 18 year old music major – at church. She was playing a classical piece on the piano, and I fell hard! We were drawn to one another by an inescapable force. Eventually, I told her how I felt by singing the song “Tell Me Why”. We moved in together for 9 heavenly months: until I was excommmunicated, and fear made me walk away. 7 years later I got her phone #, but never called. 7 years after that when I was 40, I got her # again. We talked until her phone died. I went to N.Y. to see her (she was married). 2 wks later we drove back to Oregon. We have been together for 18 years, and in each other’s hearts for 34. miwheeler2010@yahoo.com
